Naturalia Specimen – Fantastic Spiraling Shell
This large shell, extending slightly beyond 19 inches, is possibly of the syrinx aruanus variety of ‘trumpet’ conch shells. However, it’s spectacular tiered presentation suggests it is either a natural wonder, a related species, or possibly an example turned on a lathe to create this marvelous effect. The use of the lathe became popular among 17th century nobles who engaged this technology as an expensive hobby and pastime, often working various precious objects like ivory tusks or perhaps in this case, a sought after shell specimen, rendering the effects of the natural world into unique objects-of-art. This unique shell is perfectly suited for the contemporary or antique-inspired cabinet of curiosities.
