An exceptional 17th century Spanish devotional pendant
An exceptional 17th century Spanish goldsmith and enamel devotional pendant with a miniature of St. Francis of Paola on its obverse and a polychrome enameled Christogram: IHS, on its reverse.
The miniaturist's depiction of Francis derives from a French engraving of 1645 by Michel Lasne, following after a painted miniature portrait of the saint made in 1507 by the French illuminator Jean Bourdichon. The engraving provides a terminus ante quem (1645) for the facture of the present pendant.
