A large English slope-lidded Bible Box, dated 1673
England, 17th century

Approximate size: 68.5 (w) x 43 (d) x 30 (h) cm

On account of the rarity of drawers during the 17th century, boxes, such as the present example were quite popular in homes of the era. Though the term "Bible box" descends from the Victorian era, these boxes were intended primarily for storing family bibles which were of great value in the home, a centerpiece for family spirituality as well as a place where documents concerning ancestry and family heritage were kept.

Typical of these works, our example features a unique vertical motif with a punched pattern in low-relief. The original iron hinges and lock remain intact. The original key, regilded (probably in the 19th century), is included.

The angled top was intended for reading, and on other examples with a flat surface, for writing. Other implements commonly stored in these boxes were ink wells, quills, writing paper or other small objects and items of importance to the home. The present example features three interior upper drawers.

Condition commensurate with age with minor repairs present.
